Gua Sha Ancient History

Gua sha is a medical tool used throughout history deeply rooted in East Asia, primarily China as a holistic modality.

In traditional Chinese medicine (TMC) practice, the words “gua” meaning to scrape and ”sha” meaning sand. Gua sha was used in ancient times to treat pain and even illnesses by improving lymphatic circulation which positively impacted qi, a term used in traditional Chinese medicine for energy. It is believed that our energy can become imbalanced based on influences/experiences in daily life. These imbalances may show up as a physical symptom or emotional disruption leading to illnesses and disharmony. Physically scraping the skin with the gua sha, could clear stagnation and encourage the circulation of energy which resulted in the relief of physical symptoms such as stiffness, swelling, tightness, and pain in the body. Gua sha offers many benefits, both therapeutic and aesthetic. Taking the time to work with these minerals is the first step toward meaningful shifts in patterns of thoughts and behaviours as they hold the highest form of earth energy.

In recent years, Gua Sha has experienced a resurgence in popularity, not only in Asia but also in Western countries. It has gained cosmetic attention as it helps to lift the jawline creating a more sculpted appearance. Due to natural stone formation, each tool will be unique in colour.

How Gua Sha Are Made…

Gua sha is commonly made from natural stones or jade.

Natural stones are made up of several minerals combined in one mass that reputedly carry the direct energy of the earth. Natural stone is cut or split from real stone that has formed over thousands of years. These stones have a structure that does not lose energy and remains resistant with no effort.

Jade refers to two minerals, nephrite and jadeite. The jade that we carry is the nephrite, which is made of specific minerals through different geological processes deep within the Earth’s crust. Jade is highly prized for its beauty and has been treasured for centuries in East Asia.

As you may have noticed, there are many different gua sha stones and jade, each one has its own characteristics, effects and uses. When choosing your gua sha stone, let your body and intuition guide you as your body knows what it needs. It’s proven that where thought goes, energy flows.

Benefits of Gua Sha

  • Gua sha helps stimulate blood flow in the treated area, which can lead to improved circulation. This increased blood circulation can bring more oxygen and nutrients to the skin cells, resulting in a healthier and more vibrant complexion.

  • The scraping motion of gua sha can help stimulate the lymphatic system, which is responsible for removing waste and toxins from the body. Improved lymphatic drainage can reduce puffiness, and fluid retention which promotes a clearer complexion.

  • The gentle massage and pressure applied during gua sha can have a relaxing effect on both the body and mind. It can help reduce muscle tension, ease stress, and create a sense of relaxation and well-being.

  • Gua sha's scraping action helps release tight muscles and fascia, providing relief from tension-related discomfort. This can be particularly beneficial for areas prone to tension, such as the neck, shoulders, and jaw.

  • Using gua sha after applying skincare products can help them penetrate deeper into the skin. The massage action increases blood circulation, allowing the skin to better absorb the active ingredients in your products.

  • Regular gua sha practice is believed to promote lymphatic drainage, which can reduce puffiness and sculpt the face. This can lead to improved facial contouring and a temporary lifting effect.

  • Engaging in a gua sha routine can become a form of self-care and mindfulness. Taking time for this practice allows you to connect with your body and be present in the moment.

  • Gua sha's roots in traditional Chinese medicine emphasize the connection between physical and emotional health. Practicing gua sha can encourage a holistic approach to well-being.
